◎ Personality:

Ruca Milda is definitely not your standard hero-type. He is very kind, but at the same time he’s also shy, timid, meek and quiet. Smart and curious by nature, he absolutely loves books. In fact he enjoys studying to the point that in his opinion even tests are fun! He also doesn’t mind teaching others. He is often seen giving information about places the team visits or explaining different things to Iria or Hermana. He is also shown to be able to easily draw conclusions from the clues given to him. He is good at researching information from books as well as giving explanation in his own words. On top of that he has a very good memory as he is shown to keep track of all the battles the team has fought during their travel. At school, Ruca was one of the top students and he even mentions at one point in the game that he only once had scored something below 80 points at the test. He ended up burying the said “bad test” out of shame. It could be interesting to add that despite being a “prefect student” Ruca has a rather messy hand-writing and is quite touchy about that fact.

But Ruca’s perfection starts and ends on studying. He is completely hopeless when it comes to sports, as he always gets tired very quickly. He is also visibly lacking when it comes to interacting with people around him. He doesn’t have much confidence and is very meek.

Born in a wealthy family, Ruca was groomed to one day take over the family business after his father. As such he was often told to study and unfortunately didn’t exactly feel that his parents loved him. He even stated once that he felt like a “puppet”. His father was strict to him, not even once recognizing Ruca’s efforts and expecting that the boy will study even more than he already was. His mother on the other hand, spoiled him to no end, in his eyes treating him like a little child. Because of that he was convinced that his parents see him only as a heir and wouldn’t miss him if he ever went missing (which is why he didn’t really hesitate to run away from home). His parents also never relied on him for anything, so he simply didn’t feel needed at all. Because of that Ruca never spoke much with them, usually staying in his room to read when he was at home.

He was raised to be a polite, good-mannered and obedient boy and one of his main worries was that he would not meet his parents expectation. Yet, in spite all of that he truly loves his parents and wishes to make them proud. He doesn’t exactly agree with the kind of future they wish for him. Ruca wants to become a doctor and by achieving something by himself he wants to make his parents proud. He never talked about his plan with them, worried that they will not approve of it. However, Ruca claims that the taking over the family company is still an option he will consider, but only in case he won’t succeed in becoming a doctor.

Family aside, Ruca has also problems with his peers. Due to his timid an meek nature he was teased by his classmates a lot, to the point where he assumed that nobody liked him and that he was just a bother. He stopped talking with people afraid that they would just come to hate him sooner or later because of what kind of person he is. He began to isolate himself and he didn’t have any friends prior to the beginning of the game. It should be noted that he did not realize he is isolating himself.

Making friends with Iria finally opened his eyes. He realized that he wasn’t feeling lonely because people didn’t want to talk to him – it was him who didn’t try to talk to anyone. He was the one who always pushed everyone away from himself. He was also very shocked when he returned home and found out that his parents were worried about him and instead of being angry, believed that he had a good reason for running away like that. Also, the classmates who always teased him helped him out to run away from guards.

As you can see Ruca just doesn’t understand people. He spent long years with books, often day-dreaming and also over-thinking situations, so he has very little experience with interacting with other people. He’s very awkward around strangers, often stutters and avoids eye contact, thinking that looking someone in the eye will make them angry. He doesn’t know how to make a conversation; he also doesn’t want to offend anyone in any way and is polite and soft-spoken while talking to everyone. He comes off as someone very quiet who often agrees to almost everything. He prefers to stay behind and tries to stay away from trouble. Tries, because the trouble always seem to find him. He doesn’t expect people to be nice to him, but he always acts kind towards them. Despite feeling that he is not liked he often sees only good traits in others, even if he finds them intimidating at first. However, he can see only faults in himself as he seems to hate who he is. Even though he wants to change, he tends to quickly give up, thinking that it’s pointless, because he won’t be a better person. He often contradicts himself, as he wants badly to be noticed and liked, but he can’t like himself. He wants others to rely on him, even though he doesn’t think he’s reliable.

He’s problems with accepting himself has led him to admire Asura – his past life - who was the exact opposite of Ruca. Asura was powerful and fearless leader and Ruca for a very long time tried to become just like him. It had never worked out and to tell the truth he never actually believed it would. Thanks to his friends Ruca had eventually realized that he has to focus on his future and on the life he has right now. Also influenced by his friends, Ruca slowly learns how to become more open towards people.

Ruca is kind towards everyone, but according to him treating people with kindness or helping the injured is common sense. He could never leave someone who needs help, especially if he would be the only one able to help them. He can’t do much for himself, but for others he is willing to do a lot. He doesn’t mind getting hurt only to help someone else, even if they are a complete stranger to him. An example for this is seen at the beginning of Tales of Innocence when he does everything he can to protect Iria from getting kidnapped. In a cross-over of Tales series called Tales of the Heroes, Ruca is seen traveling to find a cause of a disease that attacked his hometown. He goes on a dangerous journey despite being sick himself. When asked why he won’t take care of his own health first, he answers that he couldn’t possibly rest when he can still move and do something to help everyone else.

He is often described as weak-willed, but that is true only when he does something for himself. When he promises someone something, be it helping them in something little he puts his entire heart in what he does and shows a very strong will to the point where nothing is able to stop him. He lives for other people and doing something for them gives him a purpose. He hates feeling helpless.

Because he hadn’t made any friends before he started his journey he has somewhat vague idea about friendship. He even states at one point in the game that the word “friend” sounds awkward to him. It also takes him some time to open up to people. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone, but he is also afraid that someone will hurt his own feelings. And that really isn’t hard to do. It’s really easy to make him cry.

Another thing is that he can’t tell how close he is to someone. After Ricardo joins the party it’s possible to view a skit where Ruca states that everyone gets along well. Ricardo tells him that he’s wrong and the atmosphere is really tense, because they all just met each other recently. In another one Ruca is talking to Ange since he’s worried he isn’t getting along with Iria at all. Ange tells him that from her point of view he gets along really well with Iria.

Ruca thinks more than he speaks. Or actually it would be better to say that he sometimes thinks too much about something to the point that in the end, he can’t bring himself to simply say it (like when he tried to think of a nickname for Iria only to eventually came to a conclusion that “it’s rude to suddenly give a nickname to someone”). He seems to quickly get lost in his own little world as well.

He also tries to be considered of feelings of other people. He often assumes that people get angry because of him and that leads him to apologize. And he apologizes a lot, because he takes blame on himself for almost everything, while at the same time he can’t blame anyone for most of the time. He is very forgiving. No matter how much he would get hurt by someone he could never bring himself to hate them. He can get angry, but he seems to be unable to hate.

But Ruca is also far from being an optimist. He often pictures the worst-case scenarios and generally doesn’t like taking the risk if he can help it. And so the reason why he can’t confesses his feelings towards Iria is because he’s afraid of being rejected. He is oblivious to the fact that his feeling are very obvious. In front of others Ruca tries his best to be optimistic, because he doesn’t want to worry anyone... which often doesn’t work. He’s really bad at pretending and lying. Sometimes it’s incredibly easy to tell how he feels just by looking at him.

It would be also important to add that Ruca doesn’t like to fight and resolves to using force when there’s no other way. He would much more prefer to talk and convince the other side that fighting is unnecessary. He is well aware of the fact that in the world such as Naraka this may not always work, but his kindness and the idea that everyone deserves to be given another chance makes him try to talk to them anyway.

◎ Powers/Abilities:

Ruca is an Avatar, which basically means he has a human body but a soul of a deva (a god-like being – actually a demon in his case).

Devic Artes - Ruca’s timid nature greatly contrasts with his strength. Even though he looks like a weakling, he actually is powerful enough to wield an apparently very heavy broadsword. Another thing is, that he can also use fire-based magic, starting from a simple and weak spells like Fireball up to unleashing a Meteor Storm upon his enemies.

All of this thanks to the Devic Artes, or actually, the power of his previous life – Asura. With them, Ruca is much stronger than he originally should be (it should be noted that when his powers are sealed, he is back to his weak self and unable to even lift his sword).

He’s also able to make himself and/or his allies even stronger, as well as to slightly heal himself.

In Tales of Innocence R it is noted that his wounds heal faster than that of normal humans. In both versions of game (Tales of Innocence and Tales of Innocence R) he recovers from a fatal wound in three days.

This is the full list of artes he can use!

Good Memory - Ruca has an incredibly good memory, that allows him to remember information he read about or was told by other people. He also keeps tracks of all the battles the party has fought during their travel what especially Iria finds ridiculous. It’s not a strange thing, when he quotes someone.

To become a doctor - Ruca's greatest wish it to become a doctor in the future, and due to this he has some medical knowledge. In various games (Tales of Innocence, Tales of Innocence R as well as crossover games) he is shown using that knowledge to help other people when they’re sick or injured.

[When the feed turns on you can see a rather nervous-looking white-haired boy. He tries not to look at the camera as he begins to speak.]

Er, h-hello… I hope I’m not bothering you, but I was wondering...

[He trails off and frowns a little. Then he tries again:]

...I was wondering how to gain more confidence. [He sighs.] As you can probably see I don’ have a lot of it. [He tries to force himself to smile, but it turns awkward.] So I was thinking... there is a lot of people here, so perhaps someone would be able to advice me what to do.

[Ruca knows he has to believe in himself, but that’s easier said than done. So perhaps someone out there knows a good way on how to become more confident. If it’s something Ruca can learn... then he will. Studying is the only thing he is truly good at, after all.

He finally looks at the camera, then bows his head a little.]

I’ll appreciate any kind of help!

[If anybody will reply to this it will already make him happy.]

◎ Third-Person Sample:

He stared at the ceiling of his new room, thinking about how much he missed his friends and his parents. During his travels, he still got homesick every now and then, but at that time he tried as best as he could not to cry or complain. Now that he thought about it he had never been truly alone. When he lived in Regnum his parents were always there. When he traveled, he traveled with his friends. But right now he was completely alone. Tears rolled down his cheeks, but it was okay. He didn’t have to hide them from anyone. He could cry as much as he wanted. Nobody would hear him now.

Nobody who could possibly care about him was here anyway.

Just in a few hours he would have to go to school. That was probably the only thing that cheered him up. He loved studying and learning new things. It allowed him to forget about his worries at least for a moment.

There was one more positive thing about school here. Ruca’s classmates were kind and that was something that really surprised him at first. He was used to getting bullied or teased more than anything else. And yet despite the kindness of people around him, he still found it hard to talk to them.

He had to open up a little more, he told himself that all the time. He realized long time ago that he had been pushing people away from himself and he didn’t want to repeat that mistake. He didn’t want to isolate himself from the world. He didn’t want to be alone. But still every time he tried to start up a conversation he found himself at loss for words. It just wasn’t so easy! Especially not when he didn’t know what to say.

At times like that he wished his friends were here. Iria and Spada would force him to talk to someone or laugh teasing him. They wouldn’t let him stay all alone like this. And if they teased him too much Ange would scold them and Ricardo would complain again about babysitting kids. And then Hermana would try to cheer Ruca up and act more like his mother than little sister figure.

Another tear rolled down his cheek, but he quickly wiped it away. He missed them, but he couldn’t stay depressed like this forever. He had to be strong.

“Iria and Spada would laugh at me if they saw me right now.” He told himself, hoping that those words would help him fight with loneliness that remained as an empty hole in his heart.
